european rail travel
Want to go travelling around Europe. What is the cheapest way to do it? & what is the best way to organise it?

We live in London and would like to visit several European countries over a period of around 1 month.

We have looked at an inter-rail pass but maybe flights would be quicker/cheaper? But on a train we’d see more of the country?

Have you ever been travelling? How would you recommend we organise it?

Also, is there a chain of hostels you could recommend?

Any help or advice would be great!
We cannot drive so travelling by car is not an option.

Hi…nice one! Sorry its all links, but a lot of travel advice is the same wherever you’re going…..A month passes quickly…best not to cram too much in….savour a few places well, then go again..about a hundred times if I had my way,but we can all dream. I’ve done loads of trips into Europe, and hardly seen any of it! There’s a lot of ground to cover. Hostels are great! …Not rough-houses or doss-houses,really nice most of them. Some of them issue swipe-card keys for the rooms, nice and secure. Some are below par,but at least it’s a safe bed for the night ,and cheap. Time for the links…I’ll add them as I find them, getting through the list of answers. Some are for USA folks,so ignore any USA Government stuff and trans-atlantic flight info…the rest is the same for us from UK…Also, for world trips, some advice and info is relevent to Europe as well…strategy for travel safety and organisation is the same most places you go…money,passport,tickets,etc..second link is a drive to Venice, just for the flavour of long trips,in case you were thinking of a long drive..some are for specific places (eg Gibraltar and Seville) but have useful tips embedded which could apply anywhere, and they’re both good to visit anyway…Seville is almost a perfect city…wonderful place………Have a great time. .sleeping bag info”’ http://uk.answers.yahoo.com/question/index;_ylt=AnASXNX83chuRJ63qKw5qJghBgx.;_ylv=3?qid=20081113113609AANYGuO&show=7#profile-info-vuJ8mvajaa. .. accommodation and travel for a November trip, but all the countries are in the same place..haha then more Euro links .. .. http://uk.answers.yahoo.com/question/index;_ylt=AgpHSAZVZfDnvHxQ9rRPKXEhBgx.;_ylv=3?qid=20081021090129AAAN40i&show=7#profile-info-e2e8a15d26d546123239deb890d2ad2aaa .. http://uk.answers.yahoo.com/question/index;_ylt=AkOuoyQTUFfsxeaEKhDGGM4hBgx.;_ylv=3?qid=20081217151749AAroVEo&show=7#profile-info-XmyGA8GRaa … http://uk.answers.yahoo.com/question/index;_ylt=AnhDu0xJIqx3Tc.1t5kg8GYhBgx.;_ylv=3?qid=20081222134138AAeKiRC&show=7#profile-info-ezAynfdIaa … http://uk.answers.yahoo.com/question/index;_ylt=AmKrDQ9StSUD21IHaPsvJrYhBgx.;_ylv=3?qid=20081223130828AAWOrYS&show=7#profile-info-PLSVajz8aa … http://uk.answers.yahoo.com/question/index;_ylt=AmKrDQ9StSUD21IHaPsvJrYhBgx.;_ylv=3?qid=20090406083917AAdHxfL&show=7#profile-info-jR5lQpN0aa … For Spain…. http://uk.answers.yahoo.com/question/index;_ylt=ArEBfm_NCMrOeg5fGRPmzuUhBgx.;_ylv=3?qid=20090313024852AAicZCw&show=7 …http://uk.answers.yahoo.com/question/index;_ylt=Ag4vayPM6Njwan6hpyENNlQhBgx.;_ylv=3?qid=20081223073232AAT0hrI&show=7#profile-info-E5H9McGtaa … top age for hostels … http://uk.answers.yahoo.com/question/index;_ylt=ApJGmn7I7x_hIUppIWemy_AhBgx.;_ylv=3?qid=20081114195827AAdDjA7&show=7#profile-info-AA11698189 …Gibraltar.. http://uk.answers.yahoo.com/question/index;_ylt=Ag4vayPM6Njwan6hpyENNlQhBgx.;_ylv=3?qid=20081223073232AAT0hrI&show=7#profile-info-E5H9McGtaa …Seville … http://uk.answers.yahoo.com/question/index;_ylt=Ag4vayPM6Njwan6hpyENNlQhBgx.;_ylv=3?qid=20090314130041AAhMMnS&show=7#profile-info-CxhH2xSQaa……….COSTS….Bus prices in Europe can be much cheaper than in UK….Reliable and cheap bus services are available all over Europe, and overnight buses can be useful to save both time and the cost of a hostel for the night. Eurail pass can save a lot if you do a lot of journeys, and are very flexible…get on and off where you like……Flights change daily,so no specific advice can be given…I’ve twice been to Seville for £23.40 from Liverpool…1p + tax each way….Ljubliana the same, with Whizzair…..Ryanair are tops for it,but Easyjet,Whizzair,(a nice Hungarian airline based in Budapest, with flights all over Europe),Jet2,and several other airlines around UK and Europe also do cheap deals. COSTS…more here about bus and hostel costs… http://uk.answers.yahoo.com/question/index;_ylt=AsI1yog4gxGoxpn9W4jskoshBgx.;_ylv=3?qid=20090329203451AAgPJJ0&show=7#profile-info-EEzrCadFaa …Destinations…’hidden gems’ .. http://uk.answers.yahoo.com/question/index;_ylt=AuPc0npGhiG3n8pQo54SwpQhBgx.;_ylv=3?qid=20090407163025AAAqjAc&show=7#profile-info-k5A4j7dmaa …link at the bottom of this for all European festivals, music, culture, allsorts…. http://uk.answers.yahoo.com/question/index;_ylt=Ah8pOiUgVKSo38OW5VLKYP8hBgx.;_ylv=3?qid=20090406083917AAdHxfL&show=7#profile-info-jR5lQpN0aa ….long answer bottom of here for ATM’s,money exchange and security … http://uk.answers.yahoo.com/question/index;_ylt=AvVtt1SsFQ8nljfpgSVgCSwhBgx.;_ylv=3?qid=20090406022058AA9c0T6&show=7#profile-info-8Fd6iCKgaa … For hostels and budget hotels all over Europe,Hostelbookers.com is the most reliable and flexible I’ve found and has no fees at all, excellent site which I’ve used world-wide with not a single problem, but others exist, loads of them.Hostelz.com is also good..Virtualtourist.com is very useful and up-to-date general travel site with input from members world-wide…click on Europe on the map,or other regions of interest… http://www.virtualtourist.com/ …. …http://www.hostelbookers.com/
